You can hang a porch swing with rope or chain.
If you want to add a swing to your porch, you can do so yourself with the help of a friend or family member. While it may be more common to hang a swing by a chain, you can also hang it with rope. Once you've measured the distance between the porch deck and roof, you'll need to buy two ropes at least double that length to have enough rope. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Determine where you'd like to position your porch swing. Choose a location that is several feet from the home's exterior to have ample room to swing back and forth.
2. Measure the width of the porch swing.
3. Place a ladder under one of the porch's roof joists. Measure and mark two points on the roof joists with a marker, according to the measurement you made in Step 1.
4. Drill two pilot holes into the roof joists on the marks. Insert eyebolts into each pilot hole and tighten by hand to temporarily hold in place.
5. Clamp vice grips on one eyebolt at a time and tighten securely into the roof joists.
6. Feed rope through each eyebolt, then position the porch swing between the dangling ropes. Tie the rope ends to the swing and lift the swing into the air about 2 feet off the porch deck. Knot the ends of each rope to hold the swing in place, then enjoy your new porch swing.
