There are many charitable organizations in Rochester, New York.
Recycle some of your belongings by donating them to charity, and give someone else the opportunity to get use out of them. A sofa, a table, chairs and other furniture can make a big difference to people who are disadvantaged or have lost their possessions. Donating unwanted items also helps reduce the strain on overflowing land fills. It's a win-win situation.
Instructions
1. Research charitable organizations online. There are many charities that have websites and provide information on what types of donations they accept. For example, the Salvation Army in Rochester, New York, Goodwill of Rochester, the Volunteers of America in Western New York, the Saints Place and the Community Place accept gently used furniture (see Resources). Check the Rochester Yellow Pages as well to find charities. Call a few of them to find out what type of donations they accept.
2. Schedule a pick-up. Some charitable organizations provide a pick-up service, others do not have the funds and will ask you to drop off your furniture. If you are unable to drop it off, consider making arrangements with family, friends and co-workers who could offer assistance. If they have items to donate but no way to drop it off, you could rent a moving vehicle and share the cost.
3. Contact local churches and homeless shelters in Rochester. They often accept donations of clothing, furniture and other household items or know of people who are in need of donations.
4. Call 1-800-GOT-JUNK. They provide pick-up service in Rochester and nationwide for furniture and many other items. There is a fee for the service, but the company donates usable furniture to local charities.
