Change Door Speakers

If you have a damaged door speaker in your vehicle or wish to replace your door speakers with aftermarket units, you can easily remove and install the speakers in your door with the right tools. Speaker removal and installation procedures vary somewhat among different vehicle model years and makes. You may need to remove the door panels in order to access the speakers, but some vehicles have removable grilles covering the speakers, making the removal and installation procedure much easier.

Instructions

1. Determine whether or not your door panels feature removable speaker grilles. If they do, use an appropriate size and type of screwdriver to remove the screws securing the speaker grilles to the door panel. If your vehicle does not have removable speaker grilles, consult an auto repair manual specific to your particular vehicle on remove the door panels.

2. Use the appropriate tools needed to remove the door panel. If your vehicle features manual window cranks, you must remove the clips holding the crank handle to the window regulator shaft in order to pull the crank off. Special removal tools are available to make the task of removing the crank handles easier (you may also be able to dislodge the clips with a flat head screwdriver on some vehicles without having to purchase a special tool).

3. Remove the mounting screws holding your door panels to the door frames (consult your repair manual to find the locations of these mounting screws). Typically, the mounting screws are located in the armrests, door handle bezel and near the side view mirrors. You will also need to use a special door panel removal tool to pop the plastic clips holding the door panel to the door frame. These special clips are usually located on the outside perimeter of the door panel.

4. Disconnect the wiring from the speaker and install the harness adapters on the end of the vehicle’s speaker wiring (disregard the use of harness adapters if you are replacing the speakers with original equipment factory units). Connect the speaker wires from the adapter harness to the corresponding positive and negative terminals on the speakers (connect the vehicle’s speaker plugs directly the terminal connection point when installing factory replacement speakers).

5. Place the speaker back into the mounting area of the door. make sure the wires are safely tucked away before replacing the speaker mounting screws. Reinstall the door panels or speaker grilles and turn on your stereo system to test the new speakers for proper functionality.
