Estimate A Flooring Cost

Flooring has hidden costs that must be included in an estimate.

Knowing the amount of flooring you need for a renovation and its cost, means you purchase enough material to complete your project, without any surprises at the checkout register. There's a standard method to estimating flooring that, depending on the type of flooring you choose, lets you get a pretty close estimate on the total cost from the comfort of your own home. Once equipped with a basic cost, you'll be able to shop for your new floor with confidence, knowing what you can afford to install. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the square footage of the flooring area by multiplying the length of the room by the width of the room. Add 10 percent to the amount for material cutting waste. This is the amount of flooring material needed for the job.

2. Multiply the square footage of the room, plus 10 percent by the price per square foot of the flooring you have selected. This will give you the cost of your flooring.

3. Determine what extra items will be needed. For example, carpeting will require the same square footage of padding, as well as threshold pieces; hardwood flooring will require nails and transition strips for doorways; and laminate flooring will be installed with underlayment and transition pieces. Add up the cost of these items.

4. Examine the quarter-round molding around the perimeter of the room and determine whether you will reuse the existing quarter round or replace it with new. If using new, measure the length of molding that will be replaced. Multiply the length of the molding by its price per linear foot.

5. Add the cost of the items on your material list. This will be the estimated cost of your flooring project.
