Build A Sofa For A Camper

A camper is a comfortable way to camp at the lakeside.

A camper lets you take your home away from home on the road when camping or traveling in your local area or across the country. Many campers are equipped with fully functioning kitchens, laundry, bathroom and other utilities. They also contain compact sleeping and living quarters. However, the small space in a camper can limit storage and seating areas. Making a box sofa with built-in storage and cushions that can be used as pillows for sleeping gives you multipurpose furniture to provided efficiency and comfort in your camper. Make this sofa yourself or hire a professional if you do not have carpentry skills.

Instructions

1. Measure the area in which you would like to fit your sofa with the measuring tape. Ensure that it is wide enough to accommodate slim back cushions but will not block access or the flow of your camper's interior. Determine how high you want this seating to be. A comfortable sofa seat should be approximately 24 inches high and 15 inches deep without the back cushions. However, you can alter this depending on the space available. You can make a two-seater sofa that is about 4 feet or 48 inches wide or alter these dimensions as needed for your camper.

2. Mark the desired measurements on the wood 2 by 2s. For example, the four long pieces that form the top and bottom of the sofa seat will be 48 inches each and the four vertical corner pieces and supporting beam pieces should be 24 inches high. The four horizontal corner pieces should be 15 inches each to form the depth of the sofa. The pieces for the lid of the sofa seat will require two pieces that are 48 inches long and four to six pieces that are 15 inches long.

3. Cut the wood with the saw to form a hollow box shape to fit into your allotted camper space. Assemble the box using the electric screwdriver and screws. Use the level to confirm that it is even in height on both sides. Assemble the frame for the lid of the sofa box separately. This lid will be seating area and requires the additional beams to provide support for the extra weight of the cushions and seated people.

4. Attach the lid of the sofa storage box using the two hinges. Cut the opaque acrylic sheets with the circular saw or a straight hand saw to size to cover the top and all the sides of the wood framed box.

5. Measure the surface and backrest area of the sofa to make the cushions. Cut the foam to size using scissors or a sliding knife, to make the cushions for the seating and back of the sofa. You can make the sofa cushion as two large seat and back pieces or as smaller pieces that can be used as pillows or outdoor floor seats. Cut and sew fitted fabric covers for the foam sofa cushions, using the sewing machine. Alternatively you can purchase pre-made or made-to-order sofa seat and back cushions.
