Decorating Ideas For A French Country Living Room

Blue and white dishes add a strong French Country feel to your living room.

It's time to turn your living room into one that radiates the look and feel of a cottage in the country. The French Country look combines elegance, nature and country into one decorative style. Does this Spark an idea?

Subtle Wall Color

Paint the walls in your living room a subdued, extremely light shade of yellow. Yellow walls radiate French country and allow you to place color elsewhere in the room.

Two Primary Colors

Commonly, French Country living rooms have two primary colors: yellow, and blue or red. Yellow is the main color of the room, typically found on the walls as well as on some furniture and drapes. Blue or red is used as an accent color in a French Country living room. Place blue or red accent items throughout the room, but limit the amount of them--too many blue or red items will take away from the French Country look and feel of the room.

Birdcage

Utilize an old birdcage as a decorative item in your French Country living room. Place the birdcage on your fireplace mantel or on an end table. Placing the birdcage on the fireplace mantel highlights the birdcage and immediately creates a country look and feel in the room. If your birdcage is old and rusted, spray paint it gold.

Blue Plates

Select a variety of white and blue or red plates of different sizes for display in your French Country living room. The differing sizes lend more visual interest to the display. If you have china plates in storage or sitting in a cabinet, utilize them in the living room. Purchase plate hangers and hang the plates on a wall. Group the plates together to create a focal point.

Furniture

Place your furniture so that the pieces face each other with a coffee table in the middle--for example, two love seats placed in the middle of the room facing each other, divided by a coffee table. This creates a conversation area in the room. Aged wood or wicker furniture go best with French Country-style decorating.

Drapes

Hang yellow, gold, blue or red drapes that reach from floor to ceiling. Drapes in a French Country living room make a statement and should look exquisite. The length of the drapes allows the breeze from an open window to blow them, making it seem as if you were sitting outside in the country.
