Donate Mattresses & Box Springs In Michigan

If it's time for a new mattress, donate your old one to a charity.

If you live in Michigan and are getting a new mattress and box spring, you can donate your old set to a local organization that can give it to someone in need. While some organizations prohibit mattress and box spring donations for health reasons, others will accept clean used sets. Your mattress and box spring donation may help someone who is sleeping on a hard floor. If you donate to a charity that is registered with the Internal Revenue Service, your donation is tax deductible.

Instructions

1. Inspect your mattress and box spring to make sure they are not soiled and do not have any rips or tears. When organizations accept mattresses and box springs, they typically only do so if they are in good condition.

2. Pick a Michigan area charity where you can donate your sleep set. As of June 2010, the Save Our Children Coalition and Goodwill of Southwestern Michigan both accept mattress and box spring donations, but Goodwill charges $10 per piece to accept them. Not all charities will accept used mattresses and box springs. You can also look for Michigan charities on the IRS website by keyword and location. Also try looking for shelters or furniture banks in your local area.

3. Contact the Michigan organization, either by phone or through its website, to inquire if it has a pick-up service or if you need to drop off the mattress and box spring at a donation center. Typically, furniture banks have a truck that picks up furniture donations. If there is a pick-up service with the charity you have chosen, make an appointment.

4. Get your donation receipt from the organization when you make your donation. If you are going to claim the donation on your taxes, you will need to hold onto the donation receipt.
