You can donate any type of furniture to Houston charities.
Many people believe that anything they donate to charity is given directly to the less fortunate. However, this is not always true. Yes, some charities donate goods directly to those in need, but others use your donations to sell in their consignment shops to raise money for their charitable cause. Proceeds from the sales of donated goods are also used to fund jobs in these thrift stores for those in need of work. If you have furniture you would like to get rid of in the Houston area, donate it to charity for the less fortunate and for your own benefit of receiving an income tax deduction.
Instructions
1. Choose which Houston charity you would like to donate your furniture to. Goodwill, the Salvation Army and the United Way are just a few of the dozens of charities located in the Houston area. To find other charities in Houston, use Charitynavigator.com to search for other charities.
2. Call your charity to discuss donation options. Some charities provide a pick-up service for those donating furniture or other large items. Others do not, and while they appreciate your donation, it is your responsibility to get it to their centers.
3. Value your items. To know how much you can claim as a deduction on your income taxes for your furniture donation you have to place a value on your donation. Valuing donations is not the responsibility of any charity.
4. Drop off or schedule a pick-up of your donated goods. Obtain your tax receipt to keep for your records.
