Doctorate Programs In California

Doctoral students find academic programs throughout California.


Aspiring doctoral students find a variety of Ph.D. programs at universities in California. The University of California system has 10 campuses featuring doctoral programs in liberal arts, business and professional fields. This system along with the California State University system offer opportunities for doctorate holders to find teaching and research jobs after graduation. Doctorate programs at universities from San Francisco to Los Angeles also provide proximity to private sector jobs in major metropolitan areas.


UCLA Anderson School of Management


The UCLA Anderson School of Management offers doctorate programs in seven areas including accounting, human resources and finance. These four-year programs include 13 credit hours in classes outside of specialties including economics, mathematics and psychology. This school also offers summer research opportunities to doctoral students including its Summer Doctoral Fellows Program. Students can offset their tuition and fees with graduate fellowships, registration fee waivers and teaching assistantships. The UCLA Community Housing Office can connect applicants and doctoral students with apartments and condominiums throughout the greater Los Angeles area.

University of California-Berkeley Haas School of Business


The University of California-Berkeley Haas School of Business issues doctorates in seven fields including real estate and marketing. Doctoral students proceed through three stages in four years including core classes in the first stage, dissertation research in the second stage and a dissertation defense in the final stage. Students pursue financial aid opportunities such as the Schwabacher Fellowship and the Joe Shoong Foundation Scholarship to pay for tuition. The Haas School of Business hosts multiple institutes such as the Institute for Business Innovation and the Asia Business Center that provide research opportunities to doctoral students.

University of California-Irvine School of Humanities


The University of California-Irvine School of Humanities hosts doctoral programs in 11 areas including history and visual studies. Doctoral students with financial needs apply for the Benton Fellows program and the Graduate Dean's Dissertation Fellowship through the Financial Aid department. The School of Humanities hosts the History Graduate Student Association and other student groups that represent the interests of Ph.D. students to faculty and administrators. The UC-Irvine Humanities Collective is an institute within the school that hosts speakers, conferences and research opportunities for doctoral students. Doctoral students research for their seminar papers and dissertations at the Langson Library.

University of California-San Francisco School of Nursing


The University of California-San Francisco School of Nursing features a Ph.D. program in nursing. The school also hosts a doctoral program in nursing health policy in conjunction with the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Doctoral students in the nursing program choose specialties including family health care nursing, community health systems and physiological nursing. The School of Nursing works with university institutes such as the Center for Symptom Management and the Institute for Health and Aging to provide research opportunities to students. The University of California-San Francisco issues Graduate Division Awards to promising nursing students to reduce financial burdens.
