Decorate A Craftsman Living Room

You can give a Craftsman living room a modern twist.

You have two main directions you can go when planning living room decor for a Craftsman style home. Either emphasize the Craftsman style with period pieces and accessories, or go with a cleaner, updated look. Some people mix and match from both options, creating an eclectic mid-century modern aesthetic. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Extend the look of a Craftsman living room with architectural elements.Echo the wood trim, moldings and prominent door and window frames of the Craftsman style by adding a picture rail or interesting details such as a ceiling medallion. Picture windows and a window seat give the space classic charm.

2. Paint your Craftsman living room in a neutral hue. A cream color in eggshell finish has a sophisticated depth, but also tends to show scuffs quickly. If you use your living room on a daily basis, consider a satin or semi-gloss finish and a hue such as pale cornflower, yellow or sophisticated stone gray. You can leave wooden trim a dark, polished stain or brighten it with cream-colored paint for a modern update.

3. Select focal point furnishings for your living room decor. A couch with a dark wood frame in a square shape echoes the boxy profile of Arts and Crafts pieces. Likewise, Mission style furniture with its elongated frames and wooden panel insets inspired by Gustav Stickley gives your Craftsman living room a classic look. If you prefer a lighter touch, consider mid-century modern furnishings in lighter wood grain and with unadorned, angular frames.

4. Dress your windows with Crafstman style window treatments. Dark wooden shutters work well but, if you prefer something that allows more light inside, consider tailored sheer panels. Roman blinds or linen shades are adjustable window treatments that combine well with Arts and Crafts decor.

5. Utilize several sources of light in your Craftsman living room. The dark wood tones can make the room feel oppressively dark unless you brighten spaces with table lamps and floor lamps. Pendant lights with square-shaped shades fit well with the furniture profiles of classic Craftsman design. Frame the doorway or the fireplace mantel with wall sconces to give the living room some up-lighting.
