Charter Schools In Charlotte North Carolina

Charter schools provide an alternative to traditional public schools.

Charter schools are primary and secondary schools that receive public funding and accept private donations. In lieu of having to submit to some of the rules required of other public schools, charter schools must reach certain yearly standards or goals that are created before the school's inception. Attending a charter school in Charlotte, North Carolina, is optional and there is no tuition as they are still a part of the public education system.

Socrates Academy

Socrates Academy offers a multi-lingual, research-based curriculum for kindergarten through sixth grade. The school covers the traditional topics of mathematics, language arts, science, and social studies while also incorporating the Greek language and the Socratic Method into the daily curriculum. The school encourages the use of questions as tools to learn, debate, and decipher meaning in conversation, research and deep thinking. The admissions process is by lottery, the most common admissions method for charter schools.

Community Charter School

Serving kindergarten through fifth grade, Community Charter School educates children through a curriculum centered around projects, seeking to incorporate the importance of community and family into the schooling experience. Grade levels are grouped by twos (K-1, 2-3, 4-5) and children are taught at their own pace. Students do not sit at desks or learn from textbooks; they learn using a more free-roaming, hands-on approach. Community Charter School focuses heavily on the arts and takes at least two field trips a month to see theatrical performances and learn more about art in the community.

Crossroads Charter High School

A predominantly African American school, Crossroads Charter High School seeks to educate teenagers beyond the traditional academic subjects by focusing on the definition and expansion of positive character traits such as honesty, respect, perseverance, citizenship and cooperation. Healthful choices such as good eating habits and exercise are also encouraged.

Other Charter Schools

Sugar Creek Charter School serves kindergarten through the eighth grade and focuses on character education and technology integration as a focal teaching point. Kennedy Charter School is an all-boys school that has teamed with Empowering Engagement to conduct research in the areas of brain development, temperament and tangible structures for success.
