Decorate An Antique Dinner Room Buffet

An antique dinner room buffet can be decorative and functional.

Displaying prized antique furniture should be the focal point of your dining room. While a dinner room buffet was originally designed to be a workhorse in the dining room or kitchen for serving food, buffets are sought by antique buffs and designers for their versatility and design element. An antique dinner room buffet is also a great place to showcase some of your other antiques and vintage finds. Most antique dinner room buffets are large and can be up to 78 inches long; this offers a large area for displaying your very best décor. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Polish and perfect your antique dinner room buffet. Make sure it looks its best before getting ready to display all of your antique or vintage finds. Start by using a lightly damp washcloth to dust away any dirt or debris. Get in between grooves and carvings to make sure no dust remains behind. Once dry, use another dry cloth to begin polishing the piece. Take great care with your wood. Popular woods include oak, mahogany and cherry for antique furniture pieces. Use only oil-based polishes designed for antique wood -- harsh oils or cleaners could discolor or ruin your dinner room buffet table. Use a small amount of polish and rub in a circular motion until you achieve a shine. Allow to dry completely.

2. Incorporate larger items to the back of the buffet. These may include antique plates, candles, vintage wine bottles, framed black and white prints, black and white family photographs, serving bowls, vases and floral arrangements. You can also use antique birdcages, serving trays, wine glasses, china collections, large clocks, wreaths, hurricane globes, large candy dishes, dolls, antique world globes, tiered metal or ceramic serving stand, serving plates, fresh greenery, plants, twigs, terrariums and stacks of books.

3. Place accent pieces in the front and around the large decorative items. Examples are small votive candles and holders, doilies, teacups and tea set, candy dishes, vintage keys, cast iron birds, small figurines, napkins, small serving bowls, pitchers, decanters, wine or ice bucket, vintage salt and pepper shakers, cheese dome and platter and cheese knives. If you are looking to entertain, some items can be brought out and incorporated into your decorating so they are also functional as well as attractive.

4. Change out items per season or occasion. Bring out all vintage dishes, glasses and cheese trays for your next cocktail party. For the Thanksgiving holiday, be sure to add fresh finds such as small pumpkins gourds and Indian corn to your antique dinner room buffet to provide a harvest backdrop to your favorite holiday snack and serving table. For Christmas, use fresh greens, clear lights and vintage ornaments to adorn a cookie and candy platter.
