Diy Shaker Molding For A Kitchen Cabinet

Shaker-style kitchen cabinet doors with modern style hardware handles

Shaker style is based on the Shaker aesthetic to produce quality furniture with very simple lines. This has translated into a popularity for furniture and cabinetry that embodies this aesthetic. Modern Shaker-style kitchen cabinet doors feature simple flat surfaces with a box frame detail. The body of the door is plain wood. The front of the door has a simple frame matching the outer edges. The frame is also straight wood. This is the common version of the Shaker-style kitchen cabinet door. This look can be created by most homeowners without difficulty. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Wash the doors and cabinet facing of the kitchen cabinets to remove dirt and grease. Use dish soap and water. Unscrew the door by removing the hinges from both the door and cabinet using a screwdriver. Unscrew the hardware and set it aside.

2. Sand the door with medium-grit sandpaper to remove the finish, using an orbital sander. An orbital sander has a movement that prevents scratches when sanding wood surfaces.

3. Measure the height of the door. Cut two pieces of 1/2-by-3-inch board to this length with a table saw. Apply carpenter's glue to the wide side of a board. Position the board vertically so that the outside edges align with the outside edges of the door. Repeat this for the other side of the door face. Nail two 3/4-inch finish nails 1 inch from the top and bottom of each board. Place wood clamps on each board.

4. Measure between the two vertical boards. Cut two pieces of 1/2-by-3-inch board to this length. Apply carpenter's glue to the wide side of a board. Position the board horizontally between the two vertical boards so that the top edge of the board is aligned with the top edge of the cabinet door. Repeat for the bottom edge. Nail two 3/4-inch finish nails 1 inch from ends of each board. Place wood clamps on each board. Fill the nail holes with wood fill using a small putty knife. Wipe off any excess glue. Allow the glue to dry for 8 hours.

5. Remove the clamps. Sand the door and frame with medium and fine sandpaper using an orbital sander.
