Do It Yourself Round Stool Covers

New stool covers can change the look of a once-dull piece of furniture.

Transforming old, out-of-date furniture into a new and refreshed look is not only worth the effort, it's also cost effective. Even small changes in color and texture can make a piece go from boring to stylish. Whether used daily at the kitchen table or as home decor accent pieces, stools can get an entirely new look simply by replacing the cover. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. A new stool cover can change the look of a boring piece of furniture.

Measure the stool's circumference. Write down all measurements on a piece of paper. Also measure the height of the round seat. Add 1 inch to the length and 3 inches to the width, then add 1 inch for seam allowance.

2. Take off all existing fabric and foam from the stool, removing staples and glue as needed until the wood is bare.

3. Attach a new piece of foam to the wooden seat. Place an over-sized piece on the seat. Then, using the seat as a guide, cut the foam so that it's the appropriate size. Poke half-inch holes in the foam, to allow for ventilation. Without vented holes, the foam inset may become a "whoopee cushion," according to "Fine Woodworking" magazine. Use spray adhesive to secure the foam to the wood, and follow the directions on the adhesive.

4. Cover the wooden seat platform and foam with neutral-colored cotton muslin. Stretch the material over the foam and, using an air-powered stapler, staple the fabric to the underside of the wood platform. Ensure there are no creases in the muslin; the fabric should look tight and smooth.

5. Staple the fabric to the stool platform. Start in the middle, and stretch the fabric from front to back. Tack down the fabric in the middle and along the circumference, to ensure there is no tension in the fabric. Using the air-powered stapler, begin attaching the fabric -- working your way along the round edge. The fabric should be free of wrinkles. Staple a piece of black polyester to the underside of the platform, to hide any crooked staples.
