Doctorate programs in communications that teach students the various communication processes and the effects that certain aspects within communication have on society are available throughout the U.S. Students may choose to specialize in a variety of areas, including media, culture and communication, information and society, or journalism and public life. Three of the country's top programs are outlined below.
New York University
New York University has a Doctor of Philosophy program in media, culture and communication. This program is designed to prepare students to become investigative scholars in media, and technological and cultural environments. Students can choose between three areas of concentration: cultural theory and criticism; media, institutions and technologies; and rhetoric, politics and public advocacy. Students will take courses that include special topics in globalization; media archaeology; and media, memory and history. They'll also be required to take courses in transnational media flows; gender, race and cultural identity; and print media and modernity.

University of Southern California
The University of Southern California has a doctorate program in communications that leads to a Doctor of Philosophy degree. This program consists of five areas of concentration. Students have a choice between information and society; interpersonal and health communication; organizational communication; media, culture and communication; and rhetoric and political communication. They'll take courses that include humanistic and social scientific approaches to human communication and quantitative research methods in communication. Students will also take courses within one of the five specializations that may include classical rhetorical theory; audience analysis; interpersonal communication; power, politics and conflict in communication; and diffusion theory and research.

Columbia University
Columbia University has a Doctor of Philosophy degree program in communications. Only four students are admitted into the Ph.D. program each year and they have a choice between three concentration areas: journalism and public life; social impact of media; and economic, legal and policy aspects of communications. Students in this program must complete five courses that span across the three areas of specialization, including proseminar in communications; social impact of mass media; communication research problems; management of information, communication and media; and mass-mediated American and global politics.
