Handmade Headboards

The pattern of fabric you use can create a festive look or a calming feel in your bedroom.

Having a decorative headboard between your bed frame and the wall can provide not only padded support for sitting up but also style, color and pattern to your room. While there are a variety of headboards for sale through various housewares companies, you can make handmade headboards for much less than you'd pay from an interior or general retail store. You'll use basic tools and supplies from your local craft store. You should be able to complete this project in an afternoon and be using your new headboard by nighttime. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the width of your bed and add at least 2 inches to this measurement, or more if you want the headboard to appear oversize. Measure along the wall how high up you want the headboard to go, using the height of your mattress as a guide. Generally a headboard 2 feet taller than the mattress surface can provide enough wall coverage for resting against.

2. Measure and cut a sheet of plywood to the size you determined, using a jigsaw. Cut a sheet of foam to this same size. Measure and cut both a piece of batting and a piece of fabric to the size of your plywood plus 6 inches in both length and width.

3. Spread your fabric on the floor with the patterned side facing down. Set the equal-size batting over the fabric and align the edges. Place your foam centered over the batting with 3 inches of batting extending beyond the foam on each side. Lay the plywood over the foam and align the edges.

4. Pull the edges of the fabric and batting around to the back of the plywood along what will be the top edge of the headboard. Hold even tension along the length of the fabric edge as you staple through the fabric and batting into the plywood, one staple every inch, across the plywood.

5. Repeat Step 4, this time working along the bottom edge of the headboard and always keeping even tension on the fabric. Follow Step 5 to wrap the sides of the fabric around to the back as well, folding the fabric as needed to make the corners smooth.

6. Use the directions on your mounting brackets' packaging to secure the headboard in place along the wall. Use as many brackets as the packaging recommends for the width of your headboard.
