Apply For Donations

If you are raising money to help pay for a new roof at the senior citizen center, or to buy dog food for the local Humane Society, then you are probably trying to solicit donations. Asking people you know to make a donation is one way to raise money, and another is to solicit donations from established organizations or businesses. To do this, you must learn ask.


Instructions


1. Identify your donation need. Asking for a donation is more than requesting money from an organization or some other donor entity. You need to understand what the money is for, and how much you will need.


2. Locate the entity from which you wish to solicit a donation. There are many organizations that give donations, including businesses, nonprofit organizations, foundations and civic, church and government entities. You will need to discover which entity is best suited to fulfill your donation request. If, for example, you are soliciting donations to set up an animal rescue, you will want to locate organizations that sponsor or are sympathetic to that cause.


3. Be prepared to answer specific questions, such as how much money you are requesting and how the funds will be used. Be ready to complete a detailed description of the program or project you want to finance with the funds, and be able to explain your goals and objectives.


4. Read the requirements for the entity you wish to solicit before making a request. Do not send an incomplete request, or one that shows a lack of research. If possible, answer all of their questions on the first request.


5. Write a professional donation request letter, if the organization does not provide specific request guidelines. Include all the information mentioned in the previous steps.


6. Learn about writing grants. Many organizations offer grant money for specific causes. Once you learn write a grant and can locate the organizations that might fulfill your request, you can make applications to multiple donors.
