Computer armoires are one of the more beautiful pieces of computer furniture on the market. The down side to this is that if they don't fit your budget, then you settle for something less than what you want. The only thing left to the do it yourself homeowner is to build their own. There are many types of inexpensive plywood on the market, but luan plywood resembles a more expensive wood called mahogany. Luan plywood looks good either stained or clear coated with polyurethane or varnish.
Instructions
1. Place the two pieces of 15-by-40-by-¾-inch luan plywood on a worktable. Measure from one end and make a mark at 20 and 20¾ inches. Place the framing square on the marks and draw a line across a 15 inch width of the plywood. These are the sides to the armoire.
2. Apply glue to the ends of the 15-by-28½-by-¾-inch luan plywood. Secure one each at the top and bottom of the armoire sides with the drywall screws. Install the third piece of plywood on the lines drawn in step 1 in the same manner.
3. Put a bead of glue at the center of the ¾-inch edges of the armoire. Place the 30-by-40-by-¼-inch luan plywood on the armoire and secure it with the 4-penny box nails.
4. Drill two 1¼-inch holes in the back of the armoire, one above the center shelf and one below it, for the cables and wires needed to connect the monitor, keyboard and mouse to the PC. They also enable connection to an electrical outlet.
5. Install the full overlay hinges on the two pieces of 15-by-20-by-¾-inch luan plywood (doors) according to the manufacturer's instructions. Install them on the armoire via the hinges.
6. Install the 30-inch piano hinge on one of the 30-inch edges of the 30-by-20-by-¾-inch luan plywood. Lay the armoire on its back and place the 30-by-20-by-¾-inch plywood over the bottom opening in the armoire. Secure the piano hinge to the bottom of the bottom shelf with the screws provided.
7. Stand the armoire upright and open the bottom door. Install the hydraulic cabinet hinge according to manufacturer's instructions.
8. Measure from the corners of the two upper doors and make marks at 1 inch. Drill a hole on these marks with the 3/16-inch drill bit. Install the two knobs accordingly. Measure from the edge of the bottom door and mark it in the center and 1 inch from the top of the door. Drill a hole with the 3/16-inch drill bit and install the knob.
