Donating furniture to charity is a great way to help others.
Donating unwanted furniture to charity has multiple advantages. If you are moving a long distance, the cost of shipping the item may be more than the cost of buying an entirely new sectional or love seat. You can also receive a tax deduction for any items you donate. While some charities may ask you to bring the item to their store, others can actually arrange for direct pickup of the item from your own home.
Instructions
1. Decide which organization you want work with based on the organization's policies or the causes it supports. You may want to work with a religiously based organization, such as the Salvation Army. You may choose to work with an organization that has broad-based aims, such as Goodwill Industries or Big Brothers, Big Sisters. You can also call a local charity that does work in your community and find out if it will accept such donations. They may choose to do so on a case by case basis rather than as official policy.
2. Call the organization you would like to work with. Speak with the person in charge of accepting donations. Find out what the organization can use and what is not acceptable for donation. Some charitable groups will only take smaller items, such as end tables, folding chairs and ottomans. Other organizations will take much larger items, such as dining room tables, full-sized couches and mattresses. Have the person verify that the item you are donating is acceptable.
3. Find out when the organization does its pickups and how they take place. The organization may knock on your door or just let you leave the item on your front porch. Label the item with the name of the organization picking it up so it is not mistaken for garbage.
4. Clean the item thoroughly before you donate it. Vacuum sofas to pick up excess crumbs or pet hair. Treat all visible spots with stain remover. Bring out the shine in wood furniture with a wood wax. Items that are in better condition will sell more easily and bring more money for the charity.
