Build Your Own Speaker Cabinets

Building your own speaker cabinets can give you control over the look and quality. Speaker cabinets are enclosures for one to five individual speakers if they are intended for home use. Cabinets can hold twenty to thirty speakers when they are used in arenas and stadiums. Designing and making your own home speaker cabinets require a few tools, plywood and hardware.

Instructions

1. Lay all speakers to be housed in the cabinet on a piece of 1/2 inch fiberboard in a straight line. Place them from smallest to largest 3 inches apart from each other. Next, draw a rectangle around all speakers with a 3-inch space around the outer speakers from the edge of the rectangle to the edge of the speakers. Trace the holes for all speakers, too.

2. Measure the depth of the largest speaker and add two inches for air space. Draw out the three other side panels on fiberboard. The rear panel is the same size as the panel in Step 1. The two sides have the same height and the width is the adjusted depth based on the largest speaker.

3. Draw a top and bottom panel on the fiberboard. They have the same width as the front and rear panel. The length is calculated by adding 1 1/2 inches onto the width of a side panel.

4. Cut all the panels out using the table saw. Use the keyhole saw to cut the holes for the speakers. Drill a hole in the rear panel near one of the ends allowing for speaker wire.

5. Sand all rough edges off the cut pieces. Brush wood stain or paint on them and allow to dry.

6. Assemble all six sides of your speaker box. The two side panels fit between the front and rear panels. Glue all edges of the panels before screwing them together. A tight air seal is key to good sound quality.
