Household Setup Checklist

Use a checklist to set up the new household.

Setting up a household involves many of the same tasks whether it's a first apartment or just relocation from the old home. While many of the staple items including food staples, dishes and cooking utensils can simply be packed up and relocated after a household is established, other items such as furniture may need to be replaced. A move to another locality will also mean that utilities and other essential services will have to be started, changed or upgraded. Does this Spark an idea?

Safety

All households should be equipped with smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. An emergency disaster kit that includes a flashlight and batteries is also an important household requirement. The other contents of the disaster kit may differ depending on the area.

Mail

Make sure that the postal service is notified of any change of address. Even in modern times when it seems the only thing the postman delivers is junk mail, it's important that a change of address card is filled out and mailed in.

Utilities

Identify the best provider for the utilities needed to run the home efficiently. Some providers will require a deposit to be paid in advance, while others will add the deposit to the first billing cycle. Most utility companies allow arrangements to be made over the phone. In some cases, the customer will have to be at the residence if inside hookup work is required.

Household Cleaning

Moving and living can be messy. Basic household cleaning items consist of a vacuum cleaner, broom, dustpan, mop, bucket, scrub brush and cleaning cloths. Dish-washing liquid and a general cleaner are also needed for a well-maintained interior.

Kitchen Setup

The proper appliances in the kitchen will make running the household easier. Essential items include flatware, dishes, glasses and bowls as well as pots, pans, a skillet, bake ware and cooking utensils. These are usually most economical when purchased as sets.

A stove and refrigerator is a must, and small appliances including a coffee maker, can opener, microwave oven, mixer, toaster and kettle will also be needed for meal preparation.

Cooking will be safer and easier with the proper tools. Pot holders, spatulas, slotted spoons, knives and cutting boards should be added to the household setup checklist.

Food item staples are unique to the individual, but salt, pepper, seasonings, flour and cooking oil are essential items in most kitchens.

Bedroom Setup

Most people can survive with the bare essentials of a lamp, alarm clock, bedding and hangers and shelves for clothes and accessory storage in the bedroom until the larger items can be purchased.

Children

Families with children deal with special household setup concerns. The area must be scrutinized for hazards, and school enrollment or transfers must be dealt with. To make the household setup as easy on the family as possible, familiar possessions should be placed in the new home as soon as possible.

Miscellaneous

Many communities set their own regulations regarding automobiles and pets. Check with local authorities to be sure of compliance.
