Imagine working on a cruise ship. Sailing the open seas, ports of call all over the world and a vacation experience every day. Sounds interesting, but how hard is it to get into the cruise line industry? There are quite a few things you should know before investing your time. A cruise ship job is rewarding and fun--but keep in mind that it takes a lot of effort and knowledge.

1. Find a service to apply with. There are vast amounts of information online about apply for a cruise ship job. Locate a reputable company by searching reviews or the Better Business Bureau, and never pay to have a job found for you. You can apply with companies online for any ship, but it’s a good idea to go directly to the cruise ship you’re applying for. Most cruise lines have recruiting information directly on their site, so you don’t have to worry about going through a service you’re not familiar with.


2. Have the required experience. Cruise ship jobs are highly sought after, so have the necessary skills before applying. If you are looking to work in the kitchen as a chef, you need to have four-star restaurant experiences. Many require public speaking classes, sales experience and more. Being an expert in your field will help you tremendously when job hunting.


3. Working on a cruise ship is not all fun and games. Most employees work every day of the week, only taking time off after 6 weeks or even at the end of your term of employment. These are not typical 8-hour days, either. Plan to work 14-hour days, 7 days per week. You’re constantly at your job when on a cruise ship, and there are extensive rules to abide by. You also must take the position for a designated period of time. You must be available for months at a time.


4. Being bilingual will help in getting a position with a cruise ship but, at the very least, have good English skills.


5. Have an excellent resume. Cruise ships get tons of resumes and applications, so make yours stand out. Be sure it has proper spelling and punctuation and have something that tells you apart from the rest of the applicants.
