Hang A Hammock To A Balcony Rail

A hammock on a deck provides a way to relax.

Before you decide to hang your hammock on a balcony rail, check with your local building inspector or building code office to ensure that you are allowed to hang a hammock from a railing. It is also a good idea to check with a structural engineer to ensure the railing will hold the increased weight load. Both of these will ensure that you follow building codes and that you provide a safe environment for anyone using the hammock. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Drill a pilot hole into the railing with a hand drill and a drill bit that measures half the diameter of the threaded shank on an eye bolt. Drill the hole deep enough to allow all the threads on the shank to go into the deck railing.

2. Thread the eye bolt into the hole as far as you can with your fingers. Slide the shaft of a screwdriver into the eye bolt and turn it into the railing until the eye in the bolt presses against the railing.

3. Attach the second eye bolt in the railing directly across from the first railing.

4. Tie the rope connected to each end of the hammock to the eye bolts. Use your preferred knot for this step.
