Donate A Mattress To Charity

Donate a Mattress to Charity

If you've recently purchased a new mattress, you might consider donating your old one to charity. Donating your used mattress to charity not only helps those in need, but recycling the mattress prevents it from ending up in a landfill and contributing to environmental pollution. Before trying to donate your old mattress, make sure it has no stains, damage, structural problems or insect infestation since charities won't accept it unless it's in good condition. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Clean your old mattress. Sprinkle baking soda over the top and bottom, and allow the baking soda to remain overnight. Vacuum the entire mattress the following morning. Remove any stains with spot remover. Check the edges of both the mattress and box spring to make sure there are no springs or wires poking through the seams.

2. Call large charities in your area, such as The Salvation Army and Goodwill, to learn if they will accept your old mattress. Some state health departments prohibit the donation of used mattresses to large charitable organizations for sanitation reasons.

3. Look in your phone book for smaller charities in your town or city. Call the charities to ask if you can donate your used mattress to them. Ask if they'll pick up the mattress or if you must deliver it.

4. Contact local churches and other places of worship in your area. Ask if they could use your old mattress for any of their mission or donation projects.

5. Check the website, HomelessShelterDirectory.org. to find a listing of homeless shelters in your town or city. Call those homeless shelters to ask if they'll accept your mattress donation.

6. Go to the website, FurnitureBank.org., which is a service that helps low-income families find furniture donations. List the used mattress that you wish to donate on their database.

7. Find the database on the website, CatholicCharitiesUSA.org. that contains nationwide listings of all Catholic charities. Look up the Catholic charities in your area, and call them to see if they'll accept your used mattress.
