A houseparent is responsible for the care of a group of children in a residential setting. Typically this is usually a group foster home or a boarding school. Being a houseparent is serious and can shape the lives of countless young people.
Childcare
A houseparent essentially takes the duties of a full-time parent to a group of children. This includes helping with schoolwork, mentoring young people that live in the house, and teaching proper behaviors that will make these children productive members of society. Houseparents also see to the physical and emotional welfare of the children, referring them to medical treatments when necessary. Depending on the institution, houseparents might also be responsible for the religious education of each child.
Domestic Duties
Domestic duties such as laundry, housekeeping and meals are the responsibility of the houseparent. Some larger facilities have support staff to assist with these domestic duties, but it essentially falls upon the shoulders of the houseparent. Many houseparents divide certain domestic duties among the children to lighten the load and teach them responsibility.

The houseparent is also responsible for developing various programs for the benefits of the children who reside in the home. These programs can include orientation for new residents, homework assistance programs, after-school activities and other programs.
Professional Development
Professional development for houseparents can include attending specialized certification classes and seminars. Training and performance evaluation can come either from the home itself or from the state. A houseparent is also responsible for the training and professional development for relief parents as well as other support staff.
