Brighten A Room With Dark Leather Furniture

Effective lighting helps make a room feel more comfortable.

Dark leather furniture absorbs the light from a room, leaving your space feeling too dark for you to feel comfortable in. By making a few changes in your room, you can add light and color, while opening your room up, bringing in a more pleasant feeling. The right color choices and lighting additions can transform your dark room, filled with leather furniture, into a bright and pleasant space you will enjoy relaxing in or entertaining guests. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Paint your walls to add a contrasting lighter color, while brightening your entire room. Select a light-colored paint. Bright cream shades are often an attractive addition to dark leather furniture. Use a high-gloss-finish paint to reflect light back into your room instead of further absorbing it. For instance, you could use a bright cream gloss color for your walls and a gloss white for your baseboards, moldings and window frame.

2. Install light-colored flooring, adding another contrast to the dark tones of your furniture. Consider a light wood flooring to accentuate any wooden elements in your furniture or a cream-color tile for the room. Add a decorative area rug--selecting either a solid color or pattern to add color to the room--to the floor in front of your furniture. As an example, add a decorative pattern area rug in front of your couch and love seat to bring in a touch of color, while providing an element of comfort to the room.

3. Bring more light into your room by adding sconces above a few pieces of furniture or floor-standing lamps to dark corners of the room. Select lamp shades to accentuate the cream color of your new walls. Select lighting fixtures that add to your overall decorating scheme, whether this entails using dark fixtures to match your leather furniture or metallic fixtures to match other elements of your furniture.

4. Aim some of your lights upwards, brightening your room from the top down, without creating so much light in your space that it distracts you once you enter. Select lightbulb colors that benefit your space, such as yellow lightbulbs to add elements of warmth to your room, white lightbulbs to add a pure light source to your space or even colored halogen bulbs to bring more colored elements to your room.

5. Install a mirror in your room, providing a sense of openness and giving the space the illusion of being larger than it is. Additionally, mirrors help reflect light throughout the room, further brightening your space.
