Make your own valance curtains to fit any window in your home.
A valance is one of the simplest window coverings around, and yet if you try to buy several at a store you may end up blowing your budget. Save money and create one-of-a-kind custom window treatments for your home when you learn to follow free directions to make simple valances. You will need basic sewing skills for these valances, or for those without sewing experience there is a no-sew option. Instructions
1. Measure the window where you will hang the valance. Purchase enough fabric for twice the width of the window; in other words, if your window is 30 inches wide, then you need 60 inches of fabric for your valance. Most fabric is sold by the yard, so if you purchase two yards you will have plenty of fabric for this window.
2. Measure the height you want for the valance. The simplest thing to do is use the standard width of the fabric for your valance height so you don't have to cut it down any further. However, if you would like to customize the height of your valances, measure the window where you want the valance to lie and then add 3 inches for the hems.
3. Cut your fabric to match the measurements determined in Steps 1 and 2. Iron the fabric smooth, then press in the side seams by 1/2 inch toward the wrong side of the fabric. Sew a straight hem down the sides to secure these seams; for the no-sew option, glue this hem down using fabric glue.
4. Fold up the bottom seam by 1/2 inch toward the wrong side of the fabric. Sew or glue in place.
5. Fold down the top seam by 1/2 inch, then fold down by 1 full inch. Sew or glue the hem in place along the edge, making an open pocket across the top of the curtain. Slide the valance rod into this pocket and hang your valances. The fabric will be longer than the rod, so gather it evenly across as you hang it.
