Growing Fig Trees From A Seed

The fig tree, according to Julia F. Martin in "Fruits of Warm Climates," actually consists of over 1,000 species that range from rubber trees. One aspect does not change, no matter the species: fig trees are considered tropical trees. The origin of the fig tree is believed to be in Western Asia, from whence its seeds were taken across the Mediterranean. Evidence of ancient fig trees is dated back to 5000 BC. Growing fig trees is usually done planting the cuttings; however, you can grow a fig tree from seed. Does this Spark an idea?

Choosing the Fig Seed

If you wish to grow a fig tree because you enjoy the beautiful leaves and the appearance of the tree, then any seed that you can collect from a fig purchased at a store will do. However, if you wish to grow a fig tree that will bear fruit, you need to have seed from a tree that's been fertilized. These figs are more likely from Turkey or other locations in the Middle East. This is because the fig wasp, which is needed for fertilization, is native to these countries, and will have, more than likely, fertilized the figs you purchase. When you purchase the figs from which to gain the seed, make sure you read the label on the package to find the right country of origin.

Prepare the Fig Seed

In order to have the seed grow, you need to clean the seed first. One of the best methods of doing this is to put a fig (or figs) in water and allow it to sit for a few days. Fermentation will occur as the fig breaks down. After the fig has broken down, carefully pour the top layer of junk that has collected at the top of the water. Add more water and repeat the process until you are left with only the clean seeds at the bottom of your container. Take the seeds from the container and set them on a sheet of paper towel and allow them to dry. When the seeds are dry, transfer them onto a dry sheet of paper towel, then wrap the paper towel inside some tinfoil. Set the tinfoil package in a warm, dark place. Check the seeds in a few days: you will find your seeds have sprouted.

Plant the Fig Seeds

Plant the fig seeds in a rich potting soil. You can add ingredients such as Super Thrive, bat guano and worm castings. As the fig is a tropical tree, place the seedling in a warm window or under a heat lamp until it gains some height. According to the California Rare Fruit Growers, the fig tree will require full sun if it is to bear fruit. This may mean, if you live in a northern part of the country, that you will always have to supplement the light the fig tree receives with some kind of growing lamp.
