Trying to guess if your furniture will fit a certain way in a room is wasted time. Come up with a specific plan by taking exact measurements of the room and furniture and drawing it to scale to help you come up with a furniture layout. Taking time to take some important measurements of the room and furniture and putting it to paper, you are able to see your furniture layout to scale before moving one piece of furniture. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Measure the room you are designing your furniture layout for. Measure any part of the room that sticks out, such as the fireplace.
2. Draw on graph paper the outline of the room. Figure each square on the graph paper represents one foot. For example, if a wall is 12 feet long, you will draw a line along 12 boxes.
3. Include in your drawing any windows and doors in the room. Label where electrical outlets are. This helps later when you begin to manipulate how the furniture will be arranged.
4. Measure the furniture for the room. Draw it on the graph paper with the same scale as the room. So if the couch is 9 feet by 4 feet, on the graph paper, draw that shape on nine squares by 4 squares.
5. Cut out the furniture shapes from the graph paper.
6. Arrange the furniture on the graph paper in the outline of the living space. Take into consideration doorways and electrical outlets.
