Recovering an ottoman is simple when you have a staple gun.
Upholstering an ottoman is one of the easier beginner upholstering projects. While you can add additional details, such as pleats or trim, covering a basic ottoman with fabric is only a 20 minute job. It will take longer for you to pick out material you want than to cover it. Ottomans are abused pieces of furniture; they are sat on, stood on or used to prop up your feet. When choosing fabric, pick heavy-weight cotton, a home décor or an outdoor fabric. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Flip the ottoman over so you can see the underside.
2. Look for screws holding the cushion to the ottoman frame. Remove the screws to remove the cushion.
3. Remove any staples holding the current fabric in place using pliers or insert the tip of the awl under the staple and pry it out. Remove the fabric covering.
4. Lay the new fabric on the work surface with the wrong side facing up.
5. Place the cushion on the fabric and center so there are about 6 extra inches of fabric all the way around. Depending on how tall your ottoman is, you may need more fabric. Pull the edge of the fabric over the cushion to the backside of the ottoman; there should be at least 2 inches of fabric extra for stapling. If you do not have those 2 inches, leave additional fabric around each side.
6. Cut the fabric all the way around leaving the required excess.
7. Pull the bottom edge of the fabric around the ottoman cushion and find the center of the bottom edge. Secure the fabric in place with a staple.
8. Move to the opposite side of the ottoman cushion and repeat securing the fabric in place in the center of the opposite side. Secure the right and left sides the same way.
9. Move back to the bottom side of the ottoman cushion. Secure additional staples in place from the center staple out towards the corners spacing them 1 inch apart. Keep the fabric tight while you staple.
10. Move to the top edge of the ottoman cushion; repeat securing the fabric towards the corners. Secure the left and the right sides the same way.
11. Pull the excess fabric in the corners straight upwards and fold in small pleats on the backside of the ottoman to make the fabric curve around the corner. Secure each pleat with a staple. Repeat for each corner.
12. Flip the cushion over and reattach it to the frame with the same screws removed before.
