It's attractive to think about designing your own furniture. Having a piece in your home that fits your vision appeals to most folks. If you have a good idea of what you like, but are having a hard time finding it in the retail world, draw your own furniture plans.
Rough sketch
All furniture begins with a rough sketch. This is where you simply draw your idea. Now, these don't have to be mini masterpieces. Simply draw a quick representation of your ideas.
Use a sketchbook for these ideas, creating a go-to reference for your ideas and inspirations. Draw many angles and views of the furniture piece. The more details you visualize, the easier it will be to develop the piece.
As you draw, make notations on the side of the sketches about sizes and materials that can be incorporated into the piece. If you're unsure of the measurements of your piece, look up standard furniture dimensions before going any further.
Scale drawing
Once settling upon on a particular piece of furniture and style, develop this into a detailed scaled drawing. This isn't as complicated as it sounds. The easiest scale to work with is quarter scale. Simply, quarter scale is when 1/4 of an inch equals 1 inch. You can do this with regular or triangular scale rulers. if using a triangular scale rulers, use the side marked for quarter scale.
If you don't have a ruler, place a piece of tracing paper over a sheet of graph paper. Standard graph paper is laid out in quarter-inch squares that can equal to 1 inch. The math is already done for you.
Draw all of the parts and details for your piece in quarter scale. This helps you visualize the relation between the parts and the design of the whole piece. Draw the piece in different views, too. Do this on separate pages as some views will take up almost the whole page.
Label each page as "front view," or "side view," making sure to include the measurements of the piece such as width, length and height.
Once the drawings are complete, use them to order materials and a detailed plan for building your piece of furniture.
