Does Dark Wood Furniture Go In A Room That Is Painted Purple

Dark shades of brown complement deep purple hues well.

If you've chosen purple as the main hue for your living room, den or bedroom, there are several ways to add dark wooden furniture to the space for an elegant or sophisticated feel. The purple shade can add to the inviting nature of the area, and can make the large furniture made of wood stand out even more. Does this Spark an idea?

Contrasting Hues

Choose a pastel purple such as lilac or lavender that is light enough to paint the entire room and gives the area a sense of openness. Wooden furniture such as an armoire or bookshelf in deep, dark tones will contrast with this shade of purple nicely; the color of the furniture will also appear more intense against the soft purple wall. A shade of purple that is slightly darker on the walls is an aesthetically pleasing opposition to dark furniture as well, particularly wooden dressers, beds or coffee tables that have been painted black or dark gray.

Complementary Deep Tones

If the room is painted an eggplant or jewel-toned purple, dark brown furniture will bring the warm tones of the purple to the forefront, and make the room appear more inviting. For instance, a large bed made of wood in a chocolate or cinnamon color pushed against a wall painted in deep tones will keep the purple from appearing too noticeable or feminine, which is ideal for a couple's bedroom.

Ideal Furniture Pieces

Furniture pieces that are short enough to display the vibrant purple color you've selected for the walls is ideal. For instance, a dark wood china cabinet that takes up half the width of the wall will show off the orchid-colored paint on the walls, and you can feature pastel purple decorative dishes in the cabinet to include more of the principle hue in the room. If dark pigments are prevalent in the room, select a nightstand or end table painted black to position against an aubergine wall. The warm, brownish tones of the aubergine will offset the cool color of black nicely.

Additional Accents

To emphasize the purple theme in the room, accent the dark wood furniture with a purple item. For instance, place a bouquet of real or synthetic purple tulips or lilies on top of a dresser or bureau made of dark wood. Or, cover a cocoa-colored nightstand or coffee table with a silk or satin table runner in a medium purple shade. Include more than one shade of purple in the room to complement the furniture. For instance, rich brown or black wooden furniture adorned with light purple dresser drawer handles will stand out against an eggplant-colored accent wall.
