Different Types Of Lamps

Desk lamps provide task lighting for both the home and the office.

Lamps need to provide sufficient lighting that allows you to complete the tasks you need to perform in that room, from paperwork to cooking or homework, and enjoy your pastimes such as entertaining family and friends, reading or painting---all while complementing the decor of your home or office. Different types and styles of lamps exist for all these tasks. Does this Spark an idea?

Tiffany Lamps

Available as both table lamps and standing lamps, Tiffany lamps add elegance and character to any room. These lamps have colorful hand-rolled stained-glass shades. Thus, no two Tiffany lamps are exactly the same. Tiffany lamps come in twp styles: mission-style, with straight lines, geometrical shapes on their shades and bases constructed out of oak or metal castings; and Victorian-style lamps, known for their curves, laces and adornments.

Wrought-Iron Lamps

Wrought-iron lamps complement a room with pale walls in natural colors such as tan, white and cream. The lamps' wrought-iron bars can be curved, bent and welded together in countless different designs, allowing you to find one that fits your home. You can purchase both table and standing wrought-iron lamps, making them good for both general lighting and accent lighting. You can also choose your own lamp shade to suit the style and colors of your room.

Desk Lamps

Desk lamps are table lamps that provide you with task lighting, perfect for homework and reading. These lamps usually have adjustable necks so you can direct the light where you need it most, and they generally don't require the purchase of a shade. Desk lamps come in countless designs, materials and colors; you can certainly find one to suit your decor, whether it's modern, traditional or contemporary.

Wood Lamps

Wood lamps bring nature into your home and offer you a multitude of options. Wood lamps come in different types of wood, from pine to maple; shapes (straight, curvaceous or carved; and finishes (natural, paints and stains). Wood lamps also give you the freedom to choose your own shade.

Lightbulbs

The type of bulb your lamp requires can play just as important a role as the style of lamp you choose. Some lamps use incandescent bulbs, which turn electricity into heat and heat into light. While these bulbs last between 700 and 1,000 hours and allow for use with a dimmer, their method of creating light makes them highly inefficient when it comes to cost. Halogen bulbs use less electricity than incandescent light bulbs and last longer. They also give off a crisp, clean light that you can also dim. However, these bulbs are more expensive and burn hotter than other light bulbs. Fluorescent light bulbs produce little heat, have very long life span and possess good color rendition, although you can't use them with a dimmer.
