Fix Broken Glass On A Laptop

You can replace a broken laptop screen.

The glass panel on a laptop's LCD display is the screen. While you cannot "fix" a broken or cracked glass panel, you may replace the screen to fix the LCD display. Before you disassemble the broken LCD from your laptop, make sure you have a compatible replacement that is guaranteed to fit. Refer to your user manual, or visit the manufacturer's website for a list of supported devices.

Instructions

1. Turn off your laptop, unplug the power cord from the laptop's power input, and remove the battery. The battery is located under the computer, in a chamber covered by a plastic casing. Turn over the laptop, remove the cover by undoing any locking mechanisms, such as screws or slide-locks, and gently raise the battery from its dock.

2. Remove screws from the plastic frame bordering the LCD screen. Depending on laptop model, there may be four to six screws located around the frame, which may or may not be concealed under small rubber seals. If there are seals, you can easily remove them by gently prying loose, using a small, sharp implement to dislodge them from their tiny chambers. When the screws are exposed, remove them using a flat-head or Phillips screwdriver.

3. Dislodge the screen from the bezel (plastic frame around the screen). Place a finger between the plastic frame and the glass screen, and separate the two layers, working your finger all around the frame to loosen the screen. Start from the center at the top or bottom edge, and as you loosen with one finger, use the other hand to separate the screen from the frame. If the screen does not come off, check for any screws you may have missed.

4. Tilt the loosened screen forward. With the screen released from the plastic, you will see a thin metal frame surrounding the entire panel. Maneuver the screen to access cables running from the LCD panel to the laptop. Locate the ribbon-like video cable and the power cable. Peel off the length of sticky tape holding the video cable in place, and disconnect it from the LCD screen. All laptop LCD screens have a device known as the inverter, which is a green plastic board typically attached to the base of the screen, underneath the bezel. If you are also replacing the inverter, disconnect the power cable, as well, and remove the inverter.

5. Slide the screen out. You now have the cracked LCD panel completely detached from the laptop and can replace it with a new one. Be careful about the sharp edges near the crack. Depending on laptop model, the screen may be easier to slide out sideways or upwards.

6. Install the new screen. Insert it into the shell the way you removed the old screen, and plug in the cables. Align the screen with the frame, and gently force the plastic from both sides (front and behind) to hold the screen tightly. Put the screws back on, and cover them with the rubber seals.
