Graphing a floor plan before moving furniture is a great way to make sure you know how it will look before you move it. Not only does it give you a chance to experiment, but it will save you from possibly having to move it back if you don't like it. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. The first thing you need to do is decide on the focal point of the room. This might be a fireplace or a picture window. This is important when setting up the rest of the room.
2. Using your graph paper, draw the shape of your room. The idea here is that every square on the graph paper will represent a square foot of actual space. This will help you to determine whether or not a certain piece of furniture will fit in a certain place.
3. Measure your furniture. Once you have measurements, you are going to draw your furniture onto the construction paper and cut it out. Perfection on the look of the piece of furniture is not important, the size of your drawing is. For example, if your couch is 6-feet long, your cut-out should expand the length of 6 graph squares on your room drawing. This guideline should be followed for all pieces that will go in the room.
4. Place your cut-outs on your graph paper and experiment with different furniture placement. Be aware of foot traffic when making placement decisions. Also, be aware of windows (mark them on the graph paper if it helps), doors, cable hook-ups and any other things that might hinder a certain furniture arrangement.
