About Wood Wax

Wood wax is used to clean, seal and protect your wood furniture. Wood waxes are also designed to prevent sun damage if your furniture is placed near a sunny location. Wood wax also moisturizes and restores the natural luster in the wood grain. There are numerous kinds of wood waxes, from organic and paste to beeswax. Here are some ways to use wood wax to care for furniture in your home. Does this Spark an idea?

Types

Carnauba floor wax is derived from the leaves of the carnuaba palm, and is packed with fatty acids that are known to be beneficial for protecting wood surfaces. It may be mixed with other waxes like bees wax to make a super emollient wood wax.

Beeswax is known to be a super moisturizing medium for almost any wood surface. Beeswax for wood is mostly intended for kitchen cabinets, wood furniture, paneling, wood floors, antiques, doors and severely damaged wood.

Silicone-based spray waxes are fine for quick cleaning, but may cause problems down the road if you are planning to refinish your wood product. Although these products are less expensive, they may prevent new stain from soaking in properly if you plan to strip and refinish your wood product.

Considerations

If using wood wax on a new piece of furniture, you may want to apply three layers of wax by buffing with a lint-free cloth. If the piece is older, one layer should be enough.

Make sure to start with a small amount of wax. You know you have applied too much wax if you see lines or streaks in the wax. A little wax goes a long way.

Prevention/Solution

Wipe up any liquid stains immediately. If water or liquid is allowed to sit, it may penetrate the wax layer and damage your wood.

Time Frame

To maintain the luster, dust the wood with a clean cloth each week. Consider waxing about once or twice a year. If wax is used more than twice a year, you may run the risk of having too much build up on your wood.

Effects

Once you start using your wood wax, you will find your wood will shine and the wood grain will become more prominent. Overuse will cause your wood finish to become dull.
