Art History Graduate Programs Online

Many future art historians are receiving their training online.

If you have a passion for art history and wish to pursue a higher degree while working, you may want to apply for an online graduate program in art history or a related field. While there is currently (as of 2010) only one online art history graduate program, future art historians can pursue online master's degrees in related fields, such as museum studies and historic preservation.

The Open University

The UK-based Open University offers the world's first online master's degree program in art history to students from all over the world, provided that English is your first language or you can prove your proficiency in the language via test scores. It is a three-year program that consists of a foundation module in art history, a course in themes and issues in contemporary art history and a final module, which consists of independent supervised research and a dissertation. You will then be granted an internationally recognized MA degree, which will enable you to go on and pursue a Ph.D. in art history or enter the workforce directly.

University of Leicester

The University of Leicester offers an MA program in museum studies, which takes 24 months to complete. It combines the study of art history with the practical skills needed to become a museum and/or gallery professional. In this sense, the program is geared toward students with an undergraduate degree in art history who would like to pursue a career in museums, rather than academia.
