Pair A Faux Leather Couch With A Fabric Chair In A Living Room

A faux leather sofa can work with furniture upholstered in other fabrics.

Faux leather is a fabric commonly available today on sofas and is found in a variety of colors, textures and finishes. Just like a sofa in genuine leather or woven cloth, a faux leather sofa can be coordinated with furniture covered in other fabrics. By following some simple guidelines, you can successfully pair a faux leather sofa with a woven fabric chair in your living room. Does this Spark an idea?

Quality

Just as quality can differ among leathers and cloth fabrics, so can it differ among faux leathers. Pairing a faux leather of low quality with a fabric of high quality will emphasize the difference between them. While some faux leathers do a good job of imitating genuine leather in appearance and feel, others don't. But some faux leathers are created simply for fun, in bright colors or unusual textures, and are not pretending to be the real thing. Coordinate your faux leather with a fabric that has the same level of quality within the style you wish to achieve.

Color

The color of your faux leather sofa should work with all of the other fabrics in the living room. This does not mean that its color must appear in every fabric in the room; but at least one of the dominant fabrics in the room should contain all of the colors of your color scheme, including the color of your sofa. If the room will contain only one chair, its fabric should contain the color of the sofa.

Texture

Faux leathers can be found with the same types of textures available in genuine leathers. A rustic or aged appearance, including multiple brown tones and a cracked texture, would be suited to fabrics in deep-toned patterns that are traditional in style. A smooth lime green or a silver alligator-skin texture would be appropriate to combine with contemporary fabrics in a more modern setting. Avoid choosing a similar texture for both a faux leather sofa and a fabric chair.

Finish

The finish given to the faux leather of your sofa is as important as the color and texture when combining with other fabrics to achieve a desired style. Finishes on faux leather can range from matte to very glossy. Generally, a matte or low-gloss finish is more appropriate for traditional or transitional styles and fabrics, while a very glossy finish should be reserved for a modern look that uses contemporary fabrics.
