About Jacobean Furniture

About Jacobean Furniture

When you think of historical England, you may think of kings and grandeur life. This was true during the reigns of King I and Charles I. The Jacobean era was a phase of English Renaissance. The Elizabethan era influenced the architecture, theater and decor of the Jacobean era, including sturdy and large furniture that is still around today. If you are looking for antiques, beware that some Jacobean furniture are reproduction pieces. Does this Spark an idea?

Time Frame

Jacobean furniture comes from a period of time from King James I to King James II (1603 to 1688). During this time the furniture took on different styles. The early pieces were less ornate. Colonial Americans copied the early styles of the furniture as best as they could since they did not have skilled furniture makers. They called the furniture Early American.

Identification

The best description for Jacobean furniture is "made to last." It was sturdy, large and uncomfortable. Oak and pine were the popular woods used. Most of the furniture were chests, cupboards, trestle tables and chairs. The gate-legged circular table was designed during King Charles I reign, who was King James' son. The early pieces had straight lines and some carvings.

Significance

King Charles I was more cultured than his father was, and it showed in his interior design including the furniture. Besides the gate-legged table, King Charles' furniture had more padded upholstery made from linen, tapestry and silk. Other furniture designs included inlay and veneer. The furniture was more comfortable and more ornate.

Types

For those who collect antiques, Jacobean antique furniture is still around partly because of its sturdy build. Most auctions in England still have pieces dating back to the King James I period. Reproductions sold as antiques are actually pieces produced in the early 1900s. Lines of furniture today have the same styles and will reference the Jacobean era.

Considerations

If antiques are not for you but you like the style of Jacobean furniture, look for new furniture. Just about any type of furniture exists with the Jacobean influence. Drop lid desks, stools with needlepoint, armchairs or corner chairs, side tables, needlepoint ottomans, and even buffets have the large sturdy look of the early Jacobean period or the ornate style of Charles' reign.
