Cleaning Teak

Teak is a strong tropical hardwood that resists insects and rotting.

Teak is a natural hardwood commonly used to make outdoor furniture because of its resistance to rain, wind and temperature changes. Teak wood ranges in color from tan to golden or reddish-brown. When weathered, teak wood turns to gray. Teak contains natural oils which protect it from rotting and the elements. Clean teak wood with mild products to retain its natural glow and beauty. With the proper care, you can keep your teak wood in top condition for many years. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Fill a bucket with 1 gallon warm water and add 2 tsp. dish detergent.

2. Dip a cloth or non-abrasive scrubbing pad into the soapy water, and wring it out. If you're cleaning a deck, use a mop.

3. Wipe the teak wood thoroughly with the cloth or sponge to remove any dirt, dust or residue. If you're mopping, clean one section at a time. Rinse the sponge, cloth or mop in the bucket as dirt accumulates.

4. Rinse the sponge or cloth with clean water. Wipe the furniture with the cloth to remove any soap residue. Rinse a deck or outdoor furniture with a garden hose.

5. Dry the teak wood with a towel. Allow the wood to air dry.

6. Apply 1 tsp. teak oil to a soft cloth and wipe the dry teak wood with the cloth to evenly distribute it. This is optional, but it can help protect the wood and bring out its natural glow.
