With basic carpentry skills--and a little patience--you can easily insert molding designs in your home decor. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Create and Install Molding Designs

1. Carefully measure the wall and area where you will install the molding. Consider the style of the room and possible molding designs that you want to create. Write down the measurements and create sketches of possible designs.

2. There are thousands of ways to combine standard, inexpensive molding found at home improvement stores and lumber yards. Look at different options and determine the moldings best suited for your tastes and budget. Purchase the moldings and, if desired, have the hardware store cut them down to size.

3. Use a miter saw to cut the moldings at an angle, if necessary. Lay all moldings on the floor to create your design before installing.

4. Apply a small amount of wood glue to the back side of one piece of molding. Press the molding firmly into place on the wall and use finishing nails and a hammer to secure it to the wall. If the molding's edges will be attached to other molding pieces, place a small amount of wood glue on this edge.

5. Apply a small amount of wood glue to the back side of the next piece of molding and press it firmly in place on the wall. Nail the molding to the wall. Continue this process to complete your molding design.

6. Apply wood filler to all seams and nail holes. Once the wood filler dries completely, sand moldings lightly to prepare for finishing. Stain or paint your molding in the desired color.
