Hang A Pedestal Swing From A Tree

Nothing is more welcoming than a tree swing.

A tree swing invokes some of those perfect childhood memories of crisp fall days and spending time with friends. Hanging a tree swing, however, is slightly harder than it looks. To hang a swing properly, the swing needs to be safe for the tree and the person swinging. Choose a hardwood tree such as oak or ash with branches at least 6 to 8 inches in diameter. With just a piece of wood, rope and some basic hardware, you can hang a swing that will last for many years to come. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Locate the tree that you want to hang the swing from. Look for a branch that is at least 7 to 12 feet from the ground. Climb the ladder and check the branch for any sign of decay or weakness. If you find any, look for another branch.

2. Drill a hole close to the trunk through the branch straight up from the bottom with a drill bit that is slightly bigger than the eye bolt. Use an 11/16-inch or a 6/8-inch bit.

3. Insert the eye bolt through the branch with the eye hole on the underside.

4. Place the washer on the eye bolt on the top side of the branch and screw on the two nuts.

5. Hook the carabiner to the eye of the bolt and tie a rope around the carabiner.

6. Tie two knots under the carabiner to keep the rope secure.
