Hook Remote Speakers To Surround Sound

Hooking up your surround sound system's remote speakers isn't difficult.

The key element in producing a convincing surround sound effect with your home theater system is hooking your surround, or remote, speakers to the system. If these are incorrectly hooked up, your surround sound will be incorrectly staged or distorted. Attention to a few fundamentals of speaker wiring will ensure that you do the job correctly.

Instructions

1. Identify the positive and negative leads on your speaker wire. Each speaker wire consists of two wires, or leads, one for the positive (+) signal and one for the negative (-) signal. The leads will be distinguished in some way, one from the other, usually with a series of + marks on one of the leads. If not, use the color-coding of the wire and choose one lead as the positive and one as the negative. It doesn't matter which is which as long as you're consistent.

2. Push down on the red tab on the back of the speaker to open the hole in the terminal. Slide the bare end of the positive lead into the hole, and release the tab to hold the wire tight.

3. Push down on the black tab on the back of the speaker to open the hole in the terminal. Slide the bare end of the negative lead into the hole, and release the tab to hold the wire tight.

4. Find the speaker output on your receiver that matches the surround speaker you're connecting. If your speaker is in the back right of the listening area, look for the pair of terminals marked "surround right."

5. Grasp the unconnected end of the speaker wire in your hand. Push down on the red tab on the back of the receiver's speaker output to open the hole in the terminal. Slide the bare end of the positive lead into the hole, and release the tab to hold the wire tight.

6. Push down on the black tab on the back of the receiver's speaker output to open the hole in the terminal. Slide the bare end of the negative lead into the hole, and release the tab to hold the wire tight. Repeat this and the above steps to connect the other remote speaker.
