Grow A Fig Tree

Exotic fruits are a pleasure to have, especially in your own backyard. Common fig trees can grow 15 to 30 feet in height and can be a fun and exciting new hobby if you know care for it. It's not recommended to grow a fig tree from a seed so you should get a young tree from a nursery. Follow these steps to plant and care for it. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Select an area of your yard that will receive sun at least eight hours a day. Fig trees grow easily in warm climate and the fruit will ripen better.

2. Plant your tree in a deep, wide hole in order to give the root room to grow. Make sure it's at least 10 feet away from other plants.

3. Water the tree immediately after planting. Keep the new tree well watered at all times to prevent drying out and so the leaves will not turn yellow and drop. Once the tree is established, watering only needs to be done every so often.

4. Add four inches of mulch over the root area to conserve moisture and to discourage pests. Common fig diseases are nematodes, rust, souring, pink blight and leaf blight. Once a fig tree acquires a disease, it must be treated or could die.
