Donate A Sofa In Boston

Your used sofa can go to benefit others in need.

When you're replacing furniture such as a sofa, you have options besides leaving your unwanted items on the curb for your garbage service to pick up. As long as your sofa is only gently used and still in good condition overall, you might consider giving back and donating your old sofa to charity. In the Boston area, many charitable organizations seek donations of second-hand, but still serviceable furniture. Your sofa will go to a person in need or be sold to fund the charity's service programs.

Instructions

1. Donate to the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army has locations across the state of Massachusetts including one in Boston/Saugus. They are in need of household furniture such as sofas. Furniture will be given away or sold to benefit their Adult Rehabilitation Program. They ask that you call them to schedule a furniture pickup 4 to 6 weeks in advance. They provide receipts for tax deductions if you request one.

2. Donate to Goodwill. Like the Salvation Army, Goodwill is a national organization with locations in Boston and surrounding areas, including Cambridge and Somerville. Goodwill accepts donations of furniture but can only accept regular sofas, not sofa beds. They do not provide furniture pick-up; you must drop off donations at one of their donation centers, Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.am. to 4:00 p.m., and on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

3. Donate to Boomerangs. Boomerangs, a local Boston thrift store with locations in Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury and the South End. All proceeds from Boomerangs stores go to benefit the AIDS Action Committtee. Boomerangs accepts large furniture such as sofas, but cannot take sofa beds or futons, and it asks that you clean any pet hair off the furniture prior to donation. They offer free pickup if you contact them by phone or fill out the online form on their website.

4. Donate to the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless. They are in need of used furniture to beneift formerly homeless and at-risk households across the state. The Coalition offers pick up for a fee of $25, as of December 2010, if you contact them by phone 2 to 3 weeks in advance.
