Calculate How Much Fabric Is Needed To Reupholster

Calculate How Much Fabric Is Needed to Reupholster

Furniture tends to get more expensive every year. Many times, our current furniture or pieces we find at a yard sale can be just as good as a new piece with just a new cover. Store-bought covers can look out of place or sloppy, but reupholstering a piece can make it look brand new. To get started with any reupholstering project, you will need to pick out the fabric and figure out how much is needed.

Instructions

1. Draw out a diagram of the piece you are going to reupholster. Each piece can be divided into sections, such as the back, seat and arms.

2. Take the measuring tape and measure each section. Measure the height, length and width. Take the measurement in inches and round up to the higher inch.

3. Multiply each measurement together to get the total area if the piece, such as 10 times 13 times 4. Then take the total and divide it by 36 to get the number in yards.

4. Round the number up to allow for mistakes and cuts for the total yardage needed for that section.

5. Repeat this for each section of the furniture piece. Add all section pieces together to get the total number of yards needed for the whole project.

6. Consult the guide professionals use to calculate yardage for reference to make sure you are near the right number of yards needed.
