Donate A Sleeper Sofa

Thinking about replacing your old sleeper sofa? Many people will just throw away their unwanted furniture without realizing it's still usable. In every community, there are low-income families who don't have the financial ability to purchase furniture for their home. By donating your sleeper sofa to a local charity, you will be giving a family not only a sofa, but also a bed, which is something that most of us take for granted. Along with helping out a family in need, you will be able to take a tax deduction.

Instructions

1. Clean and inspect the sleeper sofa. You still may be able to donate a sofa that has rips and tears, but some charities, such as Goodwill and The Salvation Army, will not except stained or torn sleeper sofas.

2. Identify charities and organizations in your area that accept used sleeper sofas. Charities to consider include local churches, homeless shelters and national organizations, such as The Salvation Army. The Salvation Army will come to your home to pick up you unwanted furniture; to schedule a delivery, call 1 (800) SA-TRUCK. Another national charity that will pick up your donation is Reuse Development Organization (ReDO). ReDO will donate your sleeper sofa to a qualified low-income family in your community. You can locate phone numbers and locations on the ReDO website.

3. Contact the organization or charity of your choice to determine if they are accepting used sleeper sofas.

4. Schedule a time for the sofa to be picked up. Not all organizations will pick up furniture immediately. The Salvation Army, for example, requests four to six weeks notice prior to pickup.

5. Remember to get a receipt for your donation if it is worth more than $250. You'll need this to file your tax deduction.
