Care For A Star Hibiscus

Grow Star Hibiscus for tropical appeal.

Native to the southeastern U.S., the Star Hibiscus variety of Hibiscus coccineu is a perennial plant cold hardy in USDA planting zones 7 though 11. Five-pointed, 6-inch-wide red blooms appear in mid to late summer and continue into fall, giving the plant its alternate names of Texas Star Hibiscus and Scarlet Rosemallow. The stem of Star Hibiscus grows up to 7 feet long and 3 feet wide. Grow Star Hibiscus in full sun. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Spread about 2 inches of organic mulch around the base of the plant. Mulch, like shredded bark, helps to retain much-needed moisture as it blocks weed growth. Replenish the mulch about every three years.

2. Water regularly from spring to fall. Star Hibiscus prefers moist soil. Water deeply every seven to 10 days if there is no saturating rainfall.

3. Fertilize regularly from spring to fall. Use an all-purpose water-soluble fertilizer according to the manufacturer's instruction.

4. Cut Star Hibiscus to about 6 inches above the ground after the first frost, leaving a few inches of the stem helps to identify the location of the plant.
