Planning out decorate your room, including rearranging or purchasing new furniture, requires preparation to ensure that everything will fit as you've envisioned it. Drawing a floor plan and creating furniture pieces to scale with your room will allow you to see if things will work before purchasing or moving heavy furniture. Knowing where the large pieces will go will help you determine where to put the smaller items as well. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Measure the walls in the room for which you are creating a floor plan. Accurate measurements are imperative to a successful floor plan. Take notes as you measure each wall, noting where the windows, doors and electrical outlets are, along with their respective measurements. Draw a rough sketch if it's easier for you as you note each measurement.
2. Sit down at a table, desk or other flat surface for the best results. Draw the room on your paper, with windows and doors, to scale using a ruler. Use 1 inch to represent 1 foot for the simplest conversion (in the US).
3. Draw your furniture and other pieces that will go in the room on another piece of paper using the same scale. Label each piece, then cut them out. This allows you to place and move the furniture at your discretion.
