Between its role in the California gold rush and its influential hippie culture of the sixties, San Francisco has a rich and fascinating history, which is reflected throughout the streets and neighborhoods of this famous city by the bay. There are so many things to see and do in San Francisco that if you don't plan out your trip, you might well miss out on one of the best attractions in the city.
Alcatraz
Once one of the most intimidating prisons in the country, Alcatraz is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Bay Area. The island of Alcatraz is actually quite beautiful, with lovely flowers, impressive tide pools and an incredible view of downtown San Francisco. The prison's history is fascinating and the audio tour, available in multiple languages, is a great way to explore the dark stories of the many men who regretted to call the island home.
Be sure to book your trip to the island before you leave as tickets on the boats over sell out quickly.

Chinatown
This historic district still retains one of the largest Asian populations of any area in the United States. The architecture is based on traditional Chinese building styles, and the food and culture here make the area stand out boldly in a notoriously diverse city like San Francisco.

Haight-Ashbury
Haight-Ashbury is the counter-culture capital of the city, filled with punk rockers, tattoo parlors and rock 'n roll haunts once frequented by such classic rockers as Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. While you're there, be sure to stop by Amoeba Records to check out one of the most extensive music store record collections around.

John Muir Woods
The Muir Woods is an absolutely pristine and stunning redwood forest in the North Bay. The area is only a short drive from downtown San Francisco, but the change of scenery makes you feel like you're in a completely different world. While the entire Bay Area was once filled with giant sequoias like the ones in the park, the Muir Woods is now one of the last remaining refuges of these ancient forests. Fortunately, Theodore Roosevelt protected the area from being dammed or logged over 100 years ago and now the park can be enjoyed by all.
